Ottoni Ensemble's repertoire of over 300 works - ranging from those of Gabrieli and Mozart to dozens of arrangements and commissioned works - is unparalleled in its diversity and quality. By arranging and commissioning much of it's own recital music, as well as performing many seldom played original brass quintets, Ottoni Ensemble has earned a reputation as one of Ireland's most exciting chamber groups.
The original members of Ottoni Ensemble met as students at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where they were introduced by Prof. James Cavanagh, and tutored under the direction of Fergus O'Carroll. In 1998 the quintet successfully carried out its first performance in the John Field room of the National Concert Hall, Dublin, as part of a masterclass with internationally renowned brass ensemble, The Wallace Collection. Such was the success of this session, that Ottoni Ensemble has maintained relations with John Wallace and The Wallace Collection (now The Golden Section), as well as performing with Canadian Brass. Since then, the award-winning brass quintet has participated as Artists-in-residence at the 2001 Kilkenny Arts Festival, and was the first all-brass chamber group to perform at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, also in 2001.
Most recently the quintet has performed at the 2004 Phoenix Festival in Tullamore, and the Dublin Fringe Festival. Stemming from these high profile performances, the quintet have yet again secured world premiers - from five prolific composers!
Another aspect of the ensemble's work is its involvement in education and programme of school visits. Throughout the academic year Ottoni Ensemble performs in primary and post primary schools all over Dublin giving classes on the development of the brass family, and the use of brass instruments in all styles of music. These are very entertaining and educational concerts with different programmes to suit every age group. Contact us for more information.
