"Hedgehogs are distant relatives of shrews, moles, tenrecs, and moonrats. All these animals belong to the order Insectivora of the subdivision Liptophyla. Hedgehogs belong to the family Erinaceidae, which is made up of spiny hedgehogs and hairy hedgehogs. As these pages show, there are 14 species of spiny hedgehog throughout much of the world (see p. 19). The European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus, is found throughout Europe and in New Zealand, where it was introduced in the last century. The species Atelerix albiventris has been imported into the United States, where it is kept only in captivity." |
