Intestinal worms
"As Many as 1000 of the yellow, lemon-shaped eggs of Capillara erinacei may be found in a gram of faeces. The adults of this threat worm are white and just visible to the naked eye as white whiskers. The intermediate hosts are various species of earthworm. Another Capillaria lays slightly larger eggs with parallel sides, prominent plugs, and a lacy surface.
Lung worms
"Eggs of Capillaria aerophila have a thick, 3-layered shell. Hedgehogs cough up and swallow the eggs of this lung worm, which causes bronchitis and pneumonia. Larvae of lung worm Crenosoma striatum, a major killer of hedgehogs, are also coughed up and swallowed. Adult females give birth to first-stage larvae. The intermediate hosts are various land snails. Check saliva and dropping samples under a microscope. Adult worms will only be seen in samples after a hedgehog has been treated with a wormer."
